On-site or Remote Simultaneous Interpreting

​

During on-site simultaneous interpretation, the interpreter works in an acoustically insulated booth, usually with at least one colleague. In the meeting room, the speaker talks into a microphone, and the interpreter listens through headphones, translating the speech in real time and speaking into a microphone. The audience selects the appropriate channel to hear the interpretation in their preferred language.​

 Consecutive  interpreting

It starts after the speaker has finished speaking.

The interpreter sits with the delegates, listens to the speech and, at the end, reproduces it in another language, generally with the aid of notes.

Consecutive interpreting, which is less used today than simultaneous interpreting, nevertheless remains important for a certain type of meeting (for example, business lunches, small groups, off-site trips).

Experienced interpreters are able to reproduce speeches of 10 minutes or more with great accuracy.​

Remote Simultaneous Interpretation 

In remote simultaneous interpretation, the speaker and audience are in different locations. The interpreter works from any suitable setting—such as an office, studio, or home—using a dedicated platform (Zoom being the most commonly used today) to interpret one or more speakers in real time, just as if they were physically present at the event.​

Liaison interpreting

In this interpretation mode, the interpreter works most of the time memorizing short passages and rendering them in the target language in the presence of two or more people.

Liaison interpreting is characterized by its "informal" context, such as business meetings, stipulation of contracts, sporting events, linguistic assistance in case of holidays, visits to factories, companies, museums.​

Chuchotage

Simultaneous whispered interpreting.

The interpreter stands or sits next to a person or a small target audience and whispers a simultaneous interpretation of what is being said.

This kind of interpretation can only be used for a small groups of people who are sitting or standing very close to each other.

This technique is used in bilateral meetings or in groups where only a few delegates do not master a common language.  

Chuchotage is often used in place of consecutive interpreting in order to save time. Sometimes the interpreter uses headphones so to hear the speaker's words better.
